# Your first 15 minutes with a free AI assistant

Open a free AI chat, paste a made-up email, ask for a summary, check it line by line, and learn what never to paste in, all in about 15 minutes.

- Category: Start here
- Difficulty: Easy
- Setup: about 15 minutes
- Time saved: about 5 minutes a use (our estimate, not a measurement)
- Works with: Any AI chat, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot
- Test status: Run once on made-up data on 21 Oct 2026 with Claude. One run, not proof.

## What this does

A safe first try with AI. Paste a made-up email, get a summary and every date and price, then check each line. You learn two habits every guide uses: give the AI only what it needs, and check its work.

## Before you start

- Any free AI chat account: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.
- The made-up email below, not a real one.
- About 15 minutes (our estimate).
- Privacy: check the setting in step 2 first.

## Steps

1. **Open** any AI chat and sign in.
2. **Find** the privacy setting. In Claude: Settings, then Privacy, then "Help improve our AI models." In Gemini, turning off "Keep Activity" stops future chats being used, with help from human reviewers, to improve Google's services. Google says chats are still kept for 72 hours, and may still be reviewed for other reasons, such as safety. So no setting makes it safe to paste confidential information. Other tools use Settings, Privacy or Data controls.
3. **Paste** the prompt below, then the made-up email.
4. **Check** each line against the email. Circle anything wrong or added.
5. **Ask** a follow-up, such as "Write a two-line reply asking Dana which day is right." Read it before you'd send it.
6. **Read** the "Don't paste" list. It applies to every guide.

## The prompt

```
You are helping me, a small-business owner, try an AI assistant for the first time.
Use only the email I paste below. Don't add facts that aren't in it. Don't send anything or contact anyone.
Do three things:
1. Summarize the email in 3 short bullet points a busy person can read in 20 seconds.
2. List every date, time, price or number in the email, exactly as written.
3. List anything the sender is asking me to do. If a request is unclear, write UNCLEAR and say what I should ask.
If something seems to be missing (an attachment, a name, a price), say so instead of guessing.
Email:
[paste a made-up or harmless email here]
```

## Try it with made-up data

Pine Street Bakery (fictional) gets this from a supplier:

> Subject: Your order and a price change
>
> Hi Sam, Thanks for your order of 12 cases of pastry boxes on March 3, 2030. We can deliver on Tuesday, March 11, between 8 and 10 a.m. Starting April 1, 2030, the price per case goes from $18.50 to $19.75. If you'd like to lock in the current price, place your next order by March 28. Also, can you let me know whether you still want the window-lid boxes? I've attached the new catalog. Thanks, Dana, Ridgeline Office Supply

One trap: March 11, 2030 is a Monday, not a Tuesday.

## What the AI gave us

> **Quick summary**
> - Dana confirms your order of 12 cases of pastry boxes. Delivery is set for Tuesday, March 11, between 8 and 10 a.m.
> - The price per case goes up from $18.50 to $19.75 on April 1, 2030. If you order again by March 28, you keep the current price.
> - Dana wants to know if you still want the window-lid boxes, and says a new catalog is attached.
>
> **Every date, time, price and number:** 12 cases; March 3, 2030; Tuesday, March 11; between 8 and 10 a.m.; April 1, 2030; $18.50; $19.75; March 28.
>
> **What the sender is asking you to do**
> 1. Tell Dana if you still want the window-lid boxes. UNCLEAR: are they part of this order or a new one? Ask: "How many, and at what price?"
> 2. (Optional) Order by March 28 to keep the $18.50 price. UNCLEAR: does it apply to all products?
>
> **Missing or worth checking**
> - The catalog was not attached to what you pasted.
> - In 2030, March 11 is a Monday, not a Tuesday. Ask Dana which day is right.

Good: every number copied correctly, the missing catalog flagged, the wrong weekday caught. A person still had to decide what to ask Dana and confirm the day before planning staff.

## Check before you send

- [ ] Every number and date matches the email.
- [ ] Nothing in the summary is new information.
- [ ] Weekdays match their dates.
- [ ] Missing attachments are noted, not guessed at.
- [ ] You read any drafted reply before it goes anywhere.

## Don't paste

- Card or bank numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, tax IDs or ID photos.
- Customer or staff health, legal or family details.
- Anything customers didn't agree to share, such as their contact list.
- Confidential business papers, such as contracts or payroll. Privacy settings don't make them safe to paste, and removing names doesn't remove what they say.

## When not to use this

- Real customer emails on your first try.
- As a source of facts. It can misread or invent details.
- Legal, tax or medical questions where a mistake costs real money.

## Questions owners ask

**Which free AI chat should I start with?**
Any of the big four. Pick one tied to an account you have: Google (Gemini) or Microsoft (Copilot).

**Is it safe to paste my business email into ChatGPT or Claude?**
Only what you'd be fine with others reading. Check the privacy setting, cut details you don't need, and never paste passwords or payment details.
